To Ministry of Urban development,
Government of India
Subject: Regarding failure of
India’s urban development model
20th
September 2025
Dear Sir,
India has made remarkable progress under the
visionary leadership of our honourable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi. Our
infrastructure particularly our highways, seaports and airports infrastructure
has made remarkable progress. This is
truly astonishing. However, India’s urban infrastructure has lagged badly
behind, and remains stuck in a time warp. To put it mildly, it is our biggest
Achilles heel. This may be because India’s urban development in pretty much a
state government subject, and the centre has a limited to play in this regard.
Our urban infrastructure is so bad, that it is driving away progress and
development, and causing companies to relocate in some cases. Urban
infrastructure has remained the biggest bottleneck to national development. Sir,
cities remain our window to the world, and our backbone of economic
development. Rapid progress is inconceivable without urban development. Cities
also provide foreigners with their first impressions of India. Sir, India must
come up with a comprehensive urban development plan along with rural
development strategies. This must be based on collaboration between central and
state governments. A lot needs to be done.
Recently, Sri Nitin Gadkari Ji, has come up with a plan to develop ring
roads around cities. In addition, satellite cities and radial roads are also
required. States lack funds to invest in urban infrastructure; they also lack,
knowledge, expertise and wherewithal on matters pertaining to urban development
models, including latest research on urban development. This is where the
central government, including NITI Aayog must pitch in. I do hope, anticipate
and expect that action will be taken in this regard. This is a matter of great
importance for our nation.
With warm and kind regards,
